Cannabis 101
Cannabis 101: Understanding the Basics
What is Cannabis?
Cannabis, also known as marijuana, is a flowering plant that has been used for medicinal and recreational purposes for thousands of years. At Triple M, we are dedicated to providing high-quality, locally grown cannabis products to our customers in Cape Cod & Southern Massachusetts. As a locally owned dispensary, we take pride in educating our community about the various aspects of cannabis and its potential benefits.
Cannabis contains over 100 different compounds called cannabinoids, with the two most well-known being THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is the primary psychoactive compound responsible for the “high” associated with cannabis use, while CBD is non-psychoactive and has been shown to offer a range of potential therapeutic benefits.
The Endocannabinoid System
To understand how cannabis interacts with the human body, it’s essential to know about the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex network of receptors, enzymes, and endocannabinoids that play a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis, or balance, within the body. Endocannabinoids are naturally produced by the body and are similar in structure to the cannabinoids found in cannabis.
The two main types of cannabinoid receptors in the ECS are CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are primarily found in the central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are more abundant in the immune system and peripheral tissues. When cannabinoids from cannabis interact with these receptors, they can influence various physiological processes, including pain perception, mood, appetite, and immune function.
Cannabis Strains and Their Effects
Cannabis strains are typically divided into three main categories: indica, sativa, and hybrid. Each strain has its own unique combination of cannabinoids and terpenes, which can produce different effects on the mind and body.
- Indica strains are known for their relaxing and sedative effects, making them popular for managing stress, anxiety, and insomnia. They tend to have higher levels of CBD compared to THC.
- Sativa strains are associated with more energizing and uplifting effects, often promoting creativity, focus, and social interaction. They generally have higher THC levels compared to CBD.
- Hybrid strains are a cross between indica and sativa, offering a balance of effects depending on the specific genetic makeup of the strain.
At Triple M, we carry a wide selection of locally grown indica, sativa, and hybrid strains to cater to the diverse needs and preferences of our customers in Mashpee & Plymouth, MA.
Consumption Methods
There are several ways to consume cannabis, each with its own onset, duration, and intensity of effects. Some popular consumption methods include:
- Smoking: Inhaling cannabis smoke through joints, pipes, or bongs. Effects are felt almost immediately and can last for 2-4 hours.
- Vaporizing: Heating cannabis to a temperature that releases cannabinoids and terpenes in the form of vapor, which is then inhaled. Vaporizing is considered a healthier alternative to smoking, as it produces fewer harmful byproducts.
- Edibles: Consuming cannabis-infused food or drinks. Effects can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to onset and can last for several hours. Dosing with edibles can be more challenging due to the delayed effects.
- Tinctures: Liquid cannabis extracts that are consumed sublingually (under the tongue) or added to food and drinks. Effects are felt within 15-45 minutes and can last for several hours.
- Topicals: Cannabis-infused lotions, balms, and salves that are applied directly to the skin for localized relief of pain and inflammation. Topicals do not produce psychoactive effects.
Responsible Use and Safety
As with any substance, responsible use and safety are paramount when consuming cannabis. Here are some important guidelines to follow:
1. Start low and go slow. Begin with a low dose and wait at least 2 hours before consuming more, especially with edibles.
2. Don’t drive or operate heavy machinery while under the influence of cannabis.
3. Store cannabis products securely and out of reach of children and pets.
4. Be aware of potential drug interactions and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.
5. Purchase cannabis products from licensed and reputable dispensaries like Triple M to ensure quality and safety.
